The New Metropolis Film Sparks Community Dialogue at Forum in Minnesota

New Metropolis Minnesota: Growing Together as a Region

On March 30th, over two hundred people participated in a lively dialogue with policy makers, citizens, and activists about critical issues facing the Twin Cities suburban areas.

The forum New Metropolis Minnesota: Growing Together as a Region turned out a large, diverse crowd and was recorded by Twin Cities Public Television to become part of a new 60-minute program on issues of urban sprawl, land use, suburbanization, infrastructure, and the Twin Cities’ unique position in addressing them. The program will be called New Metropolis Minnesota and air statewide throughout 2011.

In the meantime, The New Metropolis will be broadcast on TPT’s Minnesota and Life Channels on May 1st and May 8th. 1000 Friends of Minnesota is organizing watch parties.

New Metropolis Strategy Session in Detroit, Michigan, Postponed

MOSES, The Michigan Suburbs Alliance, and Working Films will host a strategy session with community leaders, activists, and educators in Detroit. John Powell of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University will frame the discussion on the challenges facing the Detroit region.

The strategy session will outline how organizations can use The New Metropolis to start the conversation and to accomplish their goals. By the end of the day, participants will have developed a cohesive audience engagement plan for sparking community action in Detroit.

New Jersey Hosting Conversations on Race

Conversations on Race is a community-wide conversation on integration happening on May 18th in the first suburbs of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey. The event will include a screening of The New Metropolis, followed by a panel discussion and roundtable dialogues among attendees. The conversation will include municipal leaders and residents from neighboring towns as well as other organizations in the state with a commitment to regional equity in municipal and regional planning.

New Metropolis Screening at Cincinnati State

Cincinnati region residents are invited to attend a screening at Cincinnati State College on May 17th. New Metropolis Filmmaker Andrea Torrice will be a Visiting Scholar at Cincinnati State, where she will screen The New Metropolis and host a discussion with students and faculty. The event is free and open to the public.

Pittsburgh carries on series of community dialogues across the region with new partners

Leadership Pittsburgh is partnering with various community organizations to hold screenings of The New Metropolis throughout the Pittsburgh region. Elected officials and community members are all part of the conversation in Pittsburgh, as they work towards building a plan for the region’s future while using The New Metropolis films as the starting point for discussions.
